Roger Parent is a Signature Member and served as President of the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society, 2011 – 2013. His work has won awards in regional exhibitions for his skillful use of vibrant color and lively, energetic brushwork. Roger is a Signature Member of the Florida Watercolor Society and has been accepted in their annual juried exhibitions in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He is also an active member of the Southern Watercolor Society and exhibited in their juried exhibition in 2013 in Kerville, Texas.
Roger finds that people are a remarkable subject for painting, especially in portraits or when they are in candid gestures. The urban landscape is especially inspiring to him because of the variety of shapes, colors, and the play of light and shadow.
His painting style appears loose and painterly. The surface quality of the painting is also important to him and he allows traces of the process of creating the painting to remain evident in the final work.
He has served as a juror and taught a workshop series of six sessions on color and design for artists at the Venice Art Center, Fla. He also provides coaching and individual instruction to artists at all levels of experience.
He attended the Boston University School of Fine Arts and the Swain School of Design in Mass. where he studied drawing and printmaking for two years under internationally recognized artist, Sigmund Abeles. He holds a BA degree, fine arts major, from the Univ. of Mass., Amherst. He also holds a Masters in Library Science and worked as an art librarian; since retiring and relocating to Sarasota, he has attended many workshops with notable watercolorists, Don Andrews, Paul Riley, Frank Francese, Sue Archer, Nicholas Simmons, Steve and Janet Rogers, Kris Parins, Mike Bailey and others.
