I am painting watercolors now for 5 years and feel I’m making progress, thanks in part to the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society that provides wonderful opportunities to exhibit work, helpful workshops, and social contact with other watercolorists.
Recently (upon turning 65), I embarked on a series of self-portraits a la the Myrna Wachnov spread featured in this summer’s issue of Watercolor Artist Magazine. I am not looking for flattering images but rather for capturing facial moods and struggling to paint hands! You’ll see a few of these on this year’s gallery page…it’s a continuation of my ongoing love of painting older folks (of which I am now one!)
With improved drawing and painting skills, I am also reaching beyond my comfort zone to portray people in interesting contexts such as a zumba class series (see Zumba Reflections) and the colorful folks in the local landmark, the Hob Nob Diner. I favor gritty over pretty, and happily there is no shortage of good material!
In addition to painting, I enjoy my role as Publicity Liaison for FSWS, contacting the newspapers and radio stations with regard to our events. This has been a gratifying experience as occasionally we receive some stellar publicity for the society and it’s award-winning artists!
